In the Soundings article, “Sea Savvy”, by Tom Neale,

the Author poses the question: “Will you know instantly if someone goes over?”
The answer is yes if the crew member or passenger is wearing SeaMe™ by BeaconWatch. Your
smartphone will alert you instantly, and will continue to monitor the victim up to 100 yards from
your boat. Then, you can immediately put the safety protocols described in Mr. Neale’s article into action:
- Assign one crew member to continuously point at the victim. Stop the boat.
- Activate the MOB feature on your GPS.
- Throw MOB gear toward the victim.
- The final steps of your rescue will depend on your type of vessel, and the practice drills you have done beforehand in anticipation of a MOB event.
Nevertheless, the most important step of the victim’s recovery is the instantaneous knowledge
of the moment he or she goes overboard. That’s why SeaMe™ may be the most important accessory on your boat.
