Sailors have depended on an accurate barometer since long before our indispensible GPS, chart plotters, and sat phones. A barometer is a simple device that allows the mariner to anticipate what the weather may be up to, and be prepared when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Today there are much more spphisticated barometers available to the sailor. They communicate with our chart plotters, sat phones, and smart phones. One example is there Mitaka Duo http://www.starpath.com/catalog/accessories/1942.htm which can interface to a chart plotter’s weather maps. Another example is the Baroplug by LCJ Capteurs http://www.lcjcapteurs.com/product/baroplug_barometer_nmea2000/?lang=en which can plug into a ship’s NEMA2000 backbone to provide barometric readings to the ship’s chart plotter.
BeaconWatch is developing solutions to enhance and improve the boater’s safety while at sea, and knowing an accurate indication of barometric pressure is a good example. Our SeaMe Tag ® will include the ability to communicate an accurate indication of barometric pressure to the SmartPhone app that we are developing. In one simple device we will provide barometric pressure, CO2, temperature, and hazard indications to other users on the vessel!
Come back often for updates on this next generation product for the safety of the sailor in your life.
